PRESS RELEASE for ADVENT ALBUM
November 25th, 2008. For immediate release.
TANGLED BLUE RELEASES ADVENT ALBUM
Minneapolis, MN The Minneapolis-based duo Tangled Blue (Aimée Wesolik-Pakan and Joel Pakan) has released a new album, Advent. The CD is a culmination of four years of work and was recorded as the couple criss-crossed the country in a VW van. Spanning 11 tracks and 250,000 miles, this recording captures the themes and emotions that encompass the Advent season (those 40 days before Christmas that are somehow obscured and intensified by a culture of commerce).
As self professed church geeks, Aimée and Joel started wondering about what it would sound like to create a set of songs based solely on one season in the church calendar. In 2004 Joel started writing songs for the project in a rented farm house outside of Menomonie, WI. Four of the songs were penned in Wisconsin before leaving for a three year tour that would take Tangled Blue from coast to coast many times and included a one year residence in Houston, Texas during hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In late 2007 Tangled Blue returned north to take up residence in a north side neighborhood of Minneapolis and complete the songs of Advent.
As Joel recounts in the liner notes to the new recording, Advent is “the most complex work we’ve ever attempted. The tension that is explicit in the season forced us to write in new ways and re-address who we are and why we make music.” From the opening track (The Days Are Coming) that calls for “justice for the president and captives in Guantanamo” to the closing song (Parade) which compares the end of the world to a slow moving celebration for which “time is always here”, Advent draws upon both ancient text and present day headlines to contrast a hopeful vision of the future.
Far from a stereotypical holiday recording, the music of Advent reflects some of the tunes in Tangled Blue’s iPod in the powerful heft of King’s X, the soul of Joan Osborne, and the heart of Bruce Cockburn. With the exception of three tracks which feature the drumming of Cleveland, OH based Rob Ticherich, all of the sounds of Advent were performed by Aimée and Joel and were recorded in locations as diverse as laundry rooms and church sanctuaries.
To schedule an interview or in-studio appearance with Tangled Blue, or to request a CD for review, please contact Aimée and Joel at info@tangledblue.com, 715-664-6165.
